Lecture - History: Vikings and England territory:

The first English king to share land with the Vikings was King Alfred the Great of Wessex, and the Viking leader involved in this arrangement was Guthrum, a Danish Viking warlord.

Key Event:

Treaty of Wedmore (878):
This treaty came after Alfred's victory over Guthrum at the Battle of Edington. Following his defeat, Guthrum and his Viking forces were surrounded, and they agreed to negotiate peace.

Land Shared:

- The result of this peace agreement was that England was divided into two major regions:
1.Wessex and the southern regions remained under Alfred’s control.
2.Danelaw: Guthrum and his Vikings were granted control over the eastern and northern parts of England, an area known as the Danelaw, which included regions such as:

East Anglia

Parts of Mercia

The North, including Yorkshire(centered around the Viking-ruled city of York)

- Guthrum himself converted to Christianity as part of the treaty and was baptized, taking the name Æthelstan.

This division of England was one of the most significant events in the Viking and Anglo-Saxon period, establishing a temporary peace between the English and the Vikings while also cementing the Vikings' presence in England.
